To build the Pro Carbon, John Slawta mastered the

art of tube-to-tube carbon construction, which is widely

considered to be the best (also one of the most labor-intensive)

methods of building a super-light, durable carbon frame.

The process requires hand-mitering a custom,

aerospace grade composite tube-set and bonding them together.

Each tube intersection is then painstakingly hand-wrapped with

carbon. From there, a carefully crafted process is applied to

achieve the optimal carbon-to-resin ratio.

The result is liquid-smooth tube joints that are incredibly strong.

This is a new "one off" frame from a local cycle distributor, 58cm with a 1in.

threaded fork. Drilled for front and rear brakes, nice rainbow flake and royal

blue powder-coat finish. We added the new Velocity B43's for display.

This frame has some nice little details, come by and check it out.

Ciclo Di Cuoio | Leather Bar Wrap

The San Diego Custom Bicycle Show is just around the corner,

We decided this year to bring an awesome vintage Cinelli Tandem.

First step in getting it prepared was applying a fresh set of

"Ciclo Di Cuoio" vintage style leather handlebar wrap in black.

How the bar stitching starts off.
We pre-soak the wrap in warm water to make it pliable.
Right side of the Stokers bar almost done.
Here's what the Captains bars look like when finished.

We let the Captains bars have a day to dry out before the leather

wrap received a trimming, last step we applied the metal end-caps.

We'll post more photos of the Tandem as we continue the work.

Madison Makeover pt.1

A 1986 Schwinn Madison getting a fresh face-lift before heading out of state.

We have some nice used components to help fill out this vintage daily drive.

My labor is $100 for this kind of prep.

Dropout alignment tools. Yes, we have the Campagnolo ones

but it's a Madison, awright.

Most Japanese bikes have a fork crown race of 27.0 (JIS).

We cut down to 26.4 (ISO). The customer wanted to use a modern,

or more commonly available headset style.

Clean, used Chris King fork race installed. We had a nice used 1" threaded

set hanging around the part boxes waiting for a project like this.

Stack height of the used Chris King was shorter than the original headset,

so the steerer was cut off the top. Baylis says that the best way to build a fork

is to use the least amount of factory threads as possible.

The fork was also given a dropout alignment adjustment too.

Madison Makeover pt.2

The top and bottom faces of headtube need to be parallel if the headset

is going to turn smoothly. That's fat "Pedro the Climber", in the background.

Notice the tools cutting surface, it faces the top and the inside

of the steering tube. You have to be careful to not overdue a

procedure like this.

I ditched the Park HS tool in favor of this one. It doesn't pinch your finger,

and it also has ball bearings.... enough said.

I never knew what these two things were for until I got my own

Campy tool kit.
They are used to screw in the pilots for the BB facing tool, as shown here.

I had an Italian set, Baylis gave me my English threaded set.
Facing tool in action. It's not necessary to do this with frames from

"custom builders" as frames should be fully prepped upon shipping.

Also, with a BB that won't butt straight up against the face of the BB shell,

( think Phil Wood ) there's no need to bother with this time consuming task.

Here's the non-drive side, faced.

We will start with a modern cartage bottom-bracket, but there is a chance

we may end up using a cup and cone BB if there's a change in cranks.

That's why we faced both sides of the shell.

Euro pros have been doing this for many years, for winter training.

Using any road bike with horizontal rear dropouts,

we can convert to fixed gear or single speed freewheel quite easily.

I've been doing these for about 10 yrs now.

We had to figure out what worked, way before Sheldon or the internet.

If you are new to cycling, a conversion is a good starting point

as it will allow you to convert back to multi-cogs, if you ever decide

to do a century (100 miles) or something like that.

Don't take a hacksaw to your dad's vintage Cinelli or Masi.

I've done Amtrak Century three times and Solvang once, on fixed.
